So......Postmodernism
Beautiful Losers 2008
This documentary follows the lives and careers of a collective group of Do-it-yourself artists and designers who inadvertently affected the art world.
In the early 1990's a loose-knit group of likeminded outsiders found common ground at a little NYC storefront gallery. Rooted in the DIY (do-it-yourself) subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop & graffiti, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Developing their craft with almost no influence from the "establishment" art world, this group, and the subcultures they sprang from, have now become a movement that has been transforming pop culture.

The Best for You is Absolutely Unattainable: Not Being Born, Not Being, Not Being Anything
Nicola Verlato attempts to realize the “unreal” in his use of mythical references. Utilizing witches to explore the depths of sexuality, mysticism and power, the paintings are composed as conceptual cinematic storyboards and tell a story from multiple points of view. Invoking, at times, sexually explicit subject matter, the artist, who looks to a wide range of popular culture sources for visual inspiration including high-tech “first-person shooter” video gaming, renders a seemingly post-apocalyptic view of American society. - Saatchi Gallery
Todd Schorr "pop surrealism"
A Pirate’s Treasure Dream
The World We Live In
Todd Schorr claims to be involved in “Cartoon Realism”. It is a
paradoxical term that finds sense in our hyper media culture. Since the
nascence of television our homes have welcomed a variety of unreal
characters. Acceptance and even belief in these avatars play a vital
role in contemporary social interaction. Children advance to adulthood
learning important lessons from these up to the minute myths. All
notions of reality obscure when viewed as the accumulation of these
experiences.

Graffiti is one of the most free art
expressions of the world; you don’t do it for money nor for an
institution, it’s free expression and it liberates yourself creatively
from a lot of restrictions

MIKE KELLEY
We're
living in the post-modern age, the death of the avant-garde. So all I
can really do now is work with this dominant culture and flay it, rip it
apart, reconfigure it, expose it.

Postmodernism
and Punk Subculture: Cultures of Authenticity and Deconstruction
"This
paper examines punk subcultures as a response to “the condition of
postmodernity,” defined here as a crisis of meaning caused by the
commodi- fication of everyday life. Punk musicians and subcultures
have responded to this crisis in one of two ways. Like other forms of
“plank parody” associated with postmodernism, the “culture of
deconstruction” expresses nihilism, ironic cynicism, and the
purposelessness experienced by young poeple. On the other hand, the
“culture of authenticity” seeks to establish a network of
underground media as an expression of artistic sincerity and
independence from the allegedly corrupting influences of commerce.
Although these cultures are in some ways diametrically opposed, they
have represented competing tendencies within punk since the 1970s,
and I argue that they are both reactions to the same crisis of
postmodern society."
